U.S.A.---"BREMEN DAY"---CHICAGO
CELEBRATING the 1st EAST WEST FLIGHT
Charles Lindbergh made the first solo transatlantic flight in May 1927, flying west to east from Long Island, New York to Paris, France. This wasn’t the first transatlantic flight though, as British aviators Alcock and Brown had flown from St. John’s Newfoundland to Ireland in June 1919.
The first transatlantic flight from east to west, which is more difficult due to headwinds, wasn’t accomplished until April 1928 when Captain Hermann Köhl, accompanied by James Fitzmaurice, a navigator, and Ehrenfried Günther Freiherr von Hünefeld, the owner of the airplane, left Ireland in the Bremen, a German Junkers W 33.The first landfall was at Greenly Island,Blanc Sablon,Labrador Canada APRIL 13 1928
